Trek Preparation in Kathmandu
The Dolpo is located in the rural far western part of Nepal. This is the largest District of Nepal, which has covers around 7,889 square feet. The people of this region are very traditional. They love to keep continue their own established culture, religion and lifestyle despite outside influence. The Dolpo region has so many beautiful tourist attraction like; unique culture, nature, religion and geography. Politically, this region is alienated and deprived of government assistance. People are forced to live under the poverty line despite their hard work. Most of the land is dry and barren, with little vegetation. This Dolpo region has several month slow and ice of the year and they can’t grow enough food for living then they have to search proper pasture for agro-farm spending as sami-nomadic life during cold season. The main source of income animal husbandry that revolves around yaks and sheep. They also collect herbs such as Yarsagumba, Jatamisi, Panchaunle, and Silajeet, etc.
There are so many interesting things about the Dolpo region. For example, they have the deepest lake in Nepal as well as the deepest lake at the highest elevation in the world, called PhoksundoTal. Dho Tarap is the human settlement at the highest elevation in the world. Shey Gumba is the most important religious site in Nepal. The Dolpo region is divided in two parts – Upper and Lower Dolpo. Upper Dolpo is dominated by the Tibetan Bon Buddhism and almost all of the culture and the lifestyle is similar to Tibet. Lower Dolpo’s culture and lifestyle is similar to India. Upper Dolpo is full of rare animal and herbs such as blue sheep, ghoral, cheetahs and other wild animals. It also has rare vegetation such as yarsagumba (or himalayan viagra), jatamasi, panchaunle, chimailo and many others. March to October is regarded as the best time for trekking in the Dolpo region. After snow fall then people move to lower land with their animal and trekking will be impossible.
There are many trekking routes in the region, which includes – Upper Dolpa circuit treks, Lower Dolpa circuit treks and Jumla Phoksundo trek. You need to have especial permit to do Upper Dolpo Trek organized with group from an authorized trekking company. (Trekking without a group is not permitted.) However, trekking in Lower Dolpo is cheaper but you need have a Phoksundo National Park Permit. This Lower Dolpo Circuit can do without group also.
